the way for a new era of Hong Kong action cinema.

After Bruce Lee’s death, Sammo Hung continued to keep the spirit of Hong Kong action cinema alive by choreographing many films. These films were often directed by Huang Feng. However, in 1977, Hung had the opportunity to direct on his own, with Huang Feng as his co-writer. This marked the beginning of a new era in Hong Kong action cinema. the way for The Iron-Fisted Monk!

The protagonist of this story is Rice Miller Luk, also known as Hung. He leads a simple life and prefers to stay out of trouble. However, everything changes when a group of Manchu Bannermen invade their town and kill his uncle. A Shaolin monk named San De, who easily defeats the intruders, offers to train Luk in martial arts at the Shaolin Temple. Luk, who is impatient and eager to seek revenge, leaves his training prematurely and returns to his town. There, he witnesses the brutal rule of the Manchu organization, led by a corrupt official named Fung Hak-An. This official has a reputation for taking whatever he wants, including people. Will Luk’s incomplete training from the Shaolin Temple and the skills learned from San De be enough to defeat the Manchus and end their reign of terror over their people?

Before the release of The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, which also tells the tale of San De and Miller Luk, The Iron-Fisted Monk came out a year earlier and gained notoriety for being rated Category III in Hong Kong, equivalent to an NC-17 rating in America. This film, directed by one of the most renowned martial arts directors, leaves nothing censored and sets the stage for his future successes.
