Types of Oats

There are various types of oats that vary in their level of processing. Oats are prepared by steaming, flattening, and slicing in distinct methods, resulting in unique varieties. Some of the most commonly known oat varieties include:

  • Whole oat groats are the purest form of oats, obtained by harvesting, cleaning, and removing the inedible hulls. They require the longest cooking time.

  • Steel Cut Oats – Steel-cut oats are most closely related to the original, unprocessed ones. They are chewier in texture and has a nutty flavor.
  • Rolled oats, also called old fashioned oats, go through a process of steaming and flattening. They have a softer texture and require less cooking time compared to steel cut oats because they are already partially cooked.

  • Fast Oats – These oats are rolled and partially cooked through steaming before being rolled even thinner. They have a soft and mushy texture and can be cooked in just a few minutes.

Comparison of Oats Porridge and Oatmeal

This type of oat-based porridge is referred to as “Oats Porridge” in India, but it is commonly known as “Oatmeal” or “Oatmeal Porridge” in the US. Despite the different names, the preparation process remains the same in both countries.

Variations

There are many options and combinations available for this porridge, such as Banana Oatmeal, Apple Oatmeal, Cinnamon flavored Oatmeal, Strawberry Oatmeal, and Mixed Berries Oatmeal. You can even include a mixture of dried fruit and nuts. The possibilities for this dish are endless.
