Chili Oil Recipe Step by Step
Heat 1/2 cup of oil over medium heat. Any neutral-tasting oil can be used.

Mix in 1 small bay leaf, 1 star anise, 1/2 tsp Szechuan pepper, and 1 inch cinnamon.
You have the option to include 4 small onions or shallots to your liking. If you choose to add garlic to the oil, use 4 cloves and keep them whole rather than chopping or mincing them.

Simmer the mixture for 10 minutes, taking care not to let the spices burn. If you notice them darkening, turn off the heat and then turn it back on. Remove the pan from the heat periodically to prevent the spices from burning. Keep the flame as low as possible, so that only small bubbles are produced. The oil temperature should ideally be between 110°C and 120°C, and should not exceed that.

4.Switch off.

Add 1 and 1/2 tablespoons of chili flakes, 1 tablespoon of chili powder, 2 tablespoons of finely chopped garlic, 1 teaspoon of brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of sesame seeds, and 1 teaspoon of salt to a mixing bowl.

First, thoroughly mix this.

Strain the oil and then add it to the mixture. Be careful not to use oil that is too hot; the time it takes to mix the ingredients should be sufficient.

The spices should be slowly bubbling up in this manner in order to prevent burning.

9.Mix it well.

The Homemade Chili Oil is now prepared!

Expert Tips
-
You may utilize an oil with a neutral taste.
-
You will need four essential aromatic spices: bay leaf, cinnamon, schezwan pepper, and star anise. Other optional aromatic options include ginger, black cardamom, and cloves.
- Ensure that the oil temperature is kept low, otherwise the spices will be burned. If the oil is too hot, turn off the heat and allow it to cool down for a few moments before switching it back on. This method will prevent the spices from getting burned.
-
Once the oil has been heated, allow it to cool for some time before mixing in the remaining ingredients in a bowl. It is recommended to give it a resting period of at least 5 minutes before straining and adding it to the spice mixture.
-
You may also incorporate small onions and spring onions for added flavor.
-
Including brown sugar is a choice, but I suggest adding it as it adds a pleasant twist.
Chili Oil Noodles
Prepare the noodles according to the instructions on the package, then mix them with chili oil. Your chili oil noodles are now prepared! For added flavor, you can also sauté onions and vegetables to add to the dish.

Serving & Storage Suggestion
You can pour it on top of eggs, noodles, pasta, toast, rolls, and more. Keep it in the refrigerator and it will last for 4-6 months, although it’s so addictive that it may not last that long.
FAQS
What is the definition of Chili Oil?
Chilli Oil is a type of oil that has been infused with chili peppers, along with other flavors and spices, to create a condiment.
Which type of chili is most suitable for this?
Typically, Chinese chili peppers or Sichuan chili flakes are utilized. However, I have substituted with regular chili flakes that are readily available here.
Why is it colored red?
The oil’s red hue is due to the inclusion of chili flakes and kochugaru, a Korean variety of chili powder. Regular chili powder can also be used as a substitute for kochugaru.
Chilli Oil Eggs
Prepare eggs to your desired level of doneness, then lightly drizzle with oil. Voila, you now have Chili Oil Eggs! I recently tried this with sunny-side up eggs and it was delicious. Serve with toast for a complete meal.
